about

WATER MUSIC source to sea was conceived as a sonic imagining of the journey taken by a raindrop as it crosses Scotland. The album weaves together contemporary classical music, folk tunes, field recordings and works by J.S Bach and Sibelius to explore and distill our relationship with water. It features a host of contemporary Scottish-based composers with new commissions by Lisa Robertson, Stuart MacRae, Timothy Cooper, Alex South and Mairearad Green alongside existing works by David Fennessy, Alastair Savage and Chris Stout.

Sequoia are known for using their practice to highlight environmental themes, inviting deeper connection with the natural world. Water is an iconic feature in Scotland, and the album celebrates how precious it is, and also its power as a creative force. The music is designed to flow in the style of a mixtape to reflect water’s changing nature, juxtaposing different styles and timbre to chart the course from delicate raindrop to crashing wave, flurrying stream to serene hill loch.

The release coincides with UN World Water Day, March 22nd 2023.

All music performed by Sequoia who are Alice Rickards (violin) & Sonia Cromarty (cello)
